A Plea from The Rhino

In the golden light of an African sunset and in complete silence, we watch a rhino grazing. It’s a perfect, powerful moment—a memory I have to capture. I reach for my camera to take the shot…

“Please don’t post the location,” whispers our guide—a gentle reminder.

“Rhinos in Southern Africa are under constant threat from poaching—driven by a black market that values their horns more than their lives. And, shockingly, one of the tools used by poachers is the internet. A single social media post—especially one with geotagging or recognizable landmarks—can unknowingly lead poachers straight to these vulnerable animals. Even if your intentions are good, posting a photo with a visible location or timestamp can give away enough information to compromise their safety. It’s something poachers are trained to look for.”

So now—take the photo, honour the moment. But keep rhinos safe by keeping their location hidden. In doing so, we become part of their protection.
